Automated Order Picking & Fulfillment

Unlock the Potential of Your Order Fulfillment Operation

As consumer expectations for rapid delivery soar and labor challenges rise, traditional manual picking methods are proving inadequate, straining resources and limiting scalability.

Our robotic piece-picking solutions directly address these inefficiencies by enhancing the precision and speed of high-volume picking operations. This technology not only meets modern logistics demands but also reduces labor reliance, freeing workers to undertake more complex, value-added tasks.

Our solutions ensure consistent performance, scale with operational needs, and position your business for success in peak season.

Intelligent Robotics & CoBots

Augmenting Your Workforce

Cobots are used to automate repetitive, unergonomic tasks. By automating the repetitive task of picking, human labor can be redirected towards more complex tasks such as customer service and quality control, adding more value to human roles and enhancing job satisfaction.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. What is robotic piece picking?
Robotic piece picking is an automated solution where a robotic arm, equipped with advanced vision and AI, selects individual items (or “eaches”) from a storage bin and places them into an order container. Unlike traditional automation, these systems can identify and handle a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and textures without needing to be pre-programmed for every individual SKU.
  1. How does the robot know how to pick up different types of items?
The robot uses AI-driven machine vision (3D cameras) to “see” the items in a bin. The software identifies the optimal “pick point” on an object in real time, even when items are tangled or piled randomly. This allows the robot to adapt to new products instantly, making it ideal for e-commerce retailers with constantly changing inventories.
  1. What kind of “hands” or grippers do piece-picking robots use?
Most piece-picking robots use versatile vacuum suction grippers or “soft” robotic fingers. Some advanced systems can even swap their end-effectors (tools) automatically during a shift to handle different product types, such as switching from a suction cup for a boxed perfume to a gentle gripper for a bagged t-shirt.
  1. Can robotic piece picking integrate with AutoStore or other AS/RS?
Yes. In fact, this is one of the most powerful applications of the technology. The robot is positioned at the “port” of an AutoStore or shuttle system. When the storage system delivers a bin (Goods-to-Robot), the arm picks the required item and places it into the shipping carton, creating a fully “lights-out” fulfillment process for that stage.
  1. How fast can a robotic piece picker work compared to a human?
Modern piece-picking robots typically achieve rates of 300 to 800 picks per hour (PPH). While a human might match this speed for short bursts, a robot maintains this rate 24/7 without breaks, fatigue, or a drop in accuracy, significantly increasing the facility’s total daily throughput.
  1. What is the accuracy rate of robotic piece picking?
Accuracy rates for robotic piece picking often exceed 99.9%. Because the system is integrated with your WMS, it verifies every pick using weight sensors or barcode scanners. This virtually eliminates the “wrong item sent” errors that are common in high-volume manual picking environments.
  1. Can these robots handle fragile or oddly shaped items?
AI advancements have made robots much better at handling “irregulars.” They can successfully pick up items in polybags and transparent packaging, as well as fragile items like glass jars and cosmetics. During the design phase, KPI Solutions performs “pick tests” on your specific SKU mix to ensure the robot can handle the majority of your inventory.
  1. What happens if the robot can’t pick an item?
When the AI encounters an object it cannot safely pick, it triggers an “exception” and alerts a human operator. In most modern setups, one human can oversee a fleet of 6 to 10 robots, only stepping in to handle the rare items the robots find too complex.
  1. Is robotic piece picking a “one-size-fits-all” solution?
No. The success of piece picking depends on your order profile. It is most effective for businesses with high-volume, small-item orders (like pharmaceuticals, electronics, or beauty products). We analyze your data to ensure the technology is deployed where it will provide the fastest ROI.
  1. How long does it take to see an ROI on robotic piece picking?
Most facilities see a return on investment within 2 to 3 years. The ROI is driven by labor savings, the elimination of “human-error” costs, and the ability to operate additional shifts during peak seasons (like Black Friday) without hiring and training temporary staff.
