Do it Best
The Client
Do it Best is a member-owned hardware, lumber, and building materials cooperative based in Fort Wayne, Indiana with $5 billion in annual sales.
The Challenge
The Do it Best warehouse in Medina, Ohio was not operating as efficiently as desired in order to serve its regional retail stores. The 500,000 square foot facility needed a re-engineered layout for improved worker safety, increased throughput, and improved traffic flow plus their existing rack needed to be retrofitted for expanded storage capacity. Additionally, the facility needed to remain fully operational during implementation of the new layout and racking so that store replenishment would not be impacted.
The Solution
KPI Solutions was engaged to analyze their current layout, product flow and volumes, storage capacity, and store replenishment needs to determine a more efficient facility layout. Through data-driven analysis, the team was able to refresh the facility layout and re-configure existing rack with new push back racking to add additional storage capacity at a more economical cost.
The Value
- Achieved 3.5 year return on investment (ROI)
- Gained 2,500 additional pallet storage locations
- Increased throughput by 6%
- Reduced reliance on labor (7 total FTEs)
- Created a safer work environment for Do it Best employees
“KPI has been a proven and trusted partner throughout the entire project and we look forward to working with them on our next automated project in Woodburn, OR.” – Steve Rose, Director of Warehouse Operations
