How It Works

AutoStore Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) consist of a modular, three-dimensional grid of self-supporting bins that are retrieved by AutoStore robots and delivered to pick stations. AutoStore automation powers robots that travel across the top of the grid, by sophisticated algorithms allowing the robots to work independently or collaboratively, to retrieve bins based on the orders required by pickers. Bins may contain a single SKU or can be subdivided to contain multiple SKUs.

Robots drive on the top of the grid to retrieve bins from top to bottom using gripper plates. All robots are wirelessly connected. The R5 will recharge as needed or when not in use. The B1 will replace its battery pack and continue working through the night. 

The Red Line:

  • Powered by rechargeable batteries and operate autonomously on top of the Grid

  • Each Robot features a lift that allows it to pick and place Bins in the Grid

  • The control system sends orders wirelessly to the Robots, directing them to and from the Ports and ordering them to recharge whenever needed 

The Black Line:

  • The B1 is a high-speed Robot, featuring an internal cavity design.  Able to accommodate taller Bin heights, accelerate faster and reach higher driving speeds 

  • The internal cavity design also allows for a smaller footprint per Robot further improving Robot trafficking and system performance

  • Battery packs are exchanged quickly for 24/7 operations


An aluminum grid contains the bins symmetrically stacked while providing top-line tracks for the robot’s driving function. The grid can be designed to match a variety of unique building geometries including columns.


Various types of workstations where the bins are utilized for picking and replenishing (Relay Port, Carousel Port, Conveyor Ports).


Uniformly stacked bins hold inventory and support the bins above. Bins are made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or polypropylene (PP-ESD) and can be 100% recycled into another form. No matter your AutoStore bin dimensions each component can be divided into 32 smaller compartments using bin partitions. 


This is the mechanism that is the database command center and traffic control unit for the AutoStore WMS.

System Configuration

Grid size, robots, and pick stations determine the scalability of design. Historical data, the number of days of inventory to be held by the system, desired throughput, the ratio of SKU, growth rate, and storage requirements are all used to guide configuration decisions.

We speak your language. AutoStore is currently connected to hundreds of different warehouse management systems (WMS). AutoStore combines with KPI’s flagship software, Kommand Performance Intelligent Software (KPI-S), to accommodate all customer needs.

AutoStore Integration Software

In order to optimize AutoStore storage systems in your warehouse, we developed a custom operating system called KPI-S A/S (AutoStore) that draws upon various components from our vast set of modular products and is configured into a product designed for fast, cost-effective implementation.

The KPI-S A/S includes all the functionality needed in many situations, including standard interfaces to Enterprise Resource Planning systems (ERP) or Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), inventory management, put-away, order fulfillment, and shipment.
